Semaglutide
What is Semaglutide (Wegovy)?
Semaglutide injection for weight loss is a higher dose (2.4mg) of semaglutide, which is a medication that was originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes. Semaglutide works by mimicking the effects of a hormone called GLP-1, which regulates blood sugar levels and helps to reduce appetite.
In its higher dose form, semaglutide injection has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of obesity in adults with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater (obesity) or with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or greater (overweight) who have at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.
Semaglutide injections for weight loss are used as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management. They are usually administered once a week using a pre-filled pen device and work by suppressing appetite, slowing down digestion, and reducing food intake.
In clinical trials, semaglutide injection for weight loss is effective in helping people lose weight and improve their overall health. However, it is important to remember that weight loss is not just about taking medication but also involves lifestyle changes, such as adopting a healthy diet and increasing physical activity.
As with any medication, there are potential risks and side effects associated with semaglutide injection for weight loss, and it should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. It is important to discuss with your healthcare provider whether semaglutide injection for weight loss is a safe and appropriate option for you.

Is Semaglutide Approved by FDA?
Yes, Wegovy (semaglutide) was approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in June 2021. It is a higher dose of semaglutide injection (2.4mg) than the dose used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes (1mg).
Wegovy is indicated as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or greater (obesity) or with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or greater (overweight) who have at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.
The approval of Wegovy was based on the results of several clinical trials, including the STEP trials, which showed that people who took Wegovy in addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity lost significantly more weight than those who received a placebo.
As with any medication, there are potential risks and side effects associated with Wegovy, and it should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. It is important to discuss with your healthcare provider whether Wegovy is a safe and appropriate option for you.
